What is a Compounding Pharmacy

Animal drug compounding is the process of combining, mixing, or altering drugs to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual animal or a small group of animals. Any animals prescribed compounded drugs must be under the care of an individual veterinarian.

These drugs play a critical role in veterinary medicine when alternatives are not available.

Compounding must be done from FDA-approved finished dose forms (not APIs).

Compounding vs Manufacturing

Compounding is the preparation of a medication to meet the prescriber’s exact specifications and to be dispensed directly to the patient with a valid prescription. Manufacturing is the mass production of drug products that have been approved by the FDA. The FDA has oversight for the integrity and safety of the API’s.

  • All compounding pharmacies are required to compound from FDA- approved finished dose forms for food-producing animals. It is illegal to compound from bulk ingredients.

  • We are inspected by state boards of pharmacy and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

  • The FDA also audits our compounding processes and facilities.
